The power of generations in the workplace

The challenge

How can the different generations work together successfully in the workplace at the local council in Zoetermeer?

The local Zoetermeer council realises that with the entry of young talent within the organisation (younging) and the increasing ageing in the workplace different generations have to work together more often. Because of the unique composition of the workplace a new dynamic is created within the organisation. This offers opportunities for growth, but it is also a challenge because the differences can easily lead to conflict. The local Zoetermeer council has asked MSL to open up the generation discussion through an interactive dialogue, in order to name possible differences and prejudices and to bundle the strengths of the four generations.

Our approach

MSL developed the generation quiz for the local Zoetermeer council. This is an active work form in which the participants master the generation question while playing the quiz. The quiz consists of different rounds which use different game elements: from answering multiple choice questions to coming up with a top 8 of most common generational prejudices. By playing the quiz employees not only know which generations are active in the workplace and what characterises them, but also how they can strengthen each other. In addition, a direct link is made with adjacent themes, such as organisational culture, talent management, the New Work Culture and change management, illustrating the theory by concrete examples.
